Boatman homers, Goen solid in relief for Napa Valley College baseball team in loss to College of Marin
April 01, 2025By MARTY JAMES martyjames.sports@gmail.com Ethan Boatman hit a home run and Blake Goen was solid in relief for the Napa Valley College baseball team, but the host Storm lost to first-place College of Marin-Kentfield, 7-5, in a Bay Valley Conference game on Saturday, March 29. College of Marin (18-9-1 overall, 8-1 Bay Valley) completed a three-game sweep of Napa Valley. Napa Valley (7-20 overall, 6-3 Bay Valley), tied for third place in the conference standings, had nine hits, struck out nine times, left five runners on base, and walked twice in the game at Storm Field. The Storm made a comeback from an early 3-0 deficit, tying the game, 5-5 in the seventh inning. College of Marin won it, scoring two runs in the top of the ninth inning. -
Napa Valley College baseball has 10 hits in loss to College of Marin
March 31, 2025By MARTY JAMES martyjames.sports@gmail.com The Napa Valley College baseball team had 10 hits, including a double from Caleb Morant and a triple from Shosei Tatsuno, but lost on Thursday to College of Marin, 10-4, in a Bay Valley Conference game in Kentfield. Tatsuno was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Morant was 1-for-5. -
Napa Valley College baseball has winning streak end with loss to College of Marin
March 27, 2025By MARTY JAMES martyjames.sports@gmail.com The Napa Valley College baseball team had its winning streak end as the Storm lost at home on Tuesday to College of Marin-Kentfield, 13-5. It was the first game of a three-game Bay Valley Conference series. The loss snapped Napa Valley’s six-game winning streak. The Storm (7-18 overall, 6-1 Bay Valley Conference) was held to five hits and left 10 runners on base. Napa Valley walked nine times and struck out nine times. Each team had three errors. -
Napa Valley College baseball turns to offense, Hernandez’s pitching in win
March 21, 2025By MARTY JAMES martyjames.sports@gmail.com Six players had multi-hit games and Roy Hernandez pitched six strong innings of one-run ball, lifting the Napa Valley College baseball team to its fifth straight win, a 14-1 Bay Valley Conference victory on Thursday over Yuba College-Marysville at Storm Field. In the second game of a three-game series, Napa Valley turned to its offense, exploding for 20 hits and 13 RBIs. The Storm (6-17 overall, 5-0 Bay Valley Conference) broke open a 1-1 game, scoring six runs in the fifth inning, four runs in the sixth inning, and three more runs in the eighth inning. Napa Valley and College of Marin-Kentfield (15-8-1 overall, 5-0 Bay Valley) are tied for first place in the conference. Jaden Hunter led the Storm’s hitting attack, going 4-for-5, scoring two runs and driving in three runs. -
Napa Valley College baseball wins fourth game in a row
March 20, 2025By MARTY JAMES martyjames.sports@gmail.com The Napa Valley College baseball team won its fourth game in a row, beating host Yuba College in the opener of a Bay Valley Conference series, 13-4, in Marysville on Wednesday. Napa Valley (5-17 overall, 4-0 Bay Valley Conference) went ahead 7-0 early in the game, scoring two runs in the first inning and five runs in the second inning. The Storm was not done scoring. Napa Valley scored three runs in the fifth inning, two runs in the sixth inning, and another run in the ninth inning. Napa Valley had its offense in high gear, producing 17 hits, with five players getting multi-hit games. Napa Valley also had 10 RBIs, left 13 runners on base, walked six times and struck out six times. -

The loss is the 11th in a row for Napa Valley (0-11 overall). Wyatt Smith had two hits and was 2-for-3 to lead the Storm offense. -
Ulm, Cueva, Morant lead Napa Valley College baseball team in loss to Chabot
February 13, 2025By MARTY JAMES martyjames.sports@gmail.com Connor Ulm and Marcellus Cueva each had two hits and Caleb Morant drove in three runs for the Napa Valley College baseball team in its 18-3 nonconference loss to Chabot College on Wednesday, Feb. 12 in Hayward. The loss is the 10th in a row for Napa Valley (0-10 overall). Napa Valley was ahead 1-0 through three innings. The game was tied 1-1 in the fourth inning. Chabot scored two runs in the sixth inning, three runs in the seventh inning, and 12 runs in the eighth inning. -

Nelson homers for Napa Valley College baseball in loss to Butte
February 11, 2025By MARTY JAMES martyjames.sports@gmail.com The Napa Valley College baseball team got a home run from Owen Nelson in a 13-2 nonconference loss to Butte College on Monday, Feb. 10 in Oroville. Nelson, the Storm’s catcher, was 2-for-4, scored a run and had an RBI. His home run was a solo shot in the third inning Napa Valley (0-8 overall) fell behind early in the game, trailing 2-0 in the first inning and 9-0 in the second inning. Butte scored four runs in the fifth inning. -
Tatsuno goes 3-for-6 for NVC baseball in nonconference loss to San Joaquin Delta
February 10, 2025By MARTY JAMES martyjames.sports@gmail.com Shosei Tatsuno had three hits and Wyatt Smith and Connor Ray each had two hits for the Napa Valley College baseball team, but the Storm lost its nonconference game to host San Joaquin Delta College, 11-10, on Wednesday, Feb. 5 at Billy Hebert Field in Stockton. Smith and Mason DeOcampo each had three RBIs. The loss is the sixth in a row for Napa Valley (0-6 overall). The Storm was leading 5-2 in the second inning, 6-2 in the fourth inning and 7-2 in the fifth inning. -
Napa Valley College baseball drops home opener to De Anza College
January 29, 2025Photos by Marty James By MARTY JAMES martyjames.sports@gmail.com Temperatures in the high 50s with sunshine and blue skies greeted the Napa Valley College baseball team for its home opener on Tuesday afternoon at Storm Field. “It's been probably three years since we played a home game in January. So, definitely a treat,” said Derek Mayer, Napa Valley’s head coach. In an early-season nonconference game that lasted 3 hours and 30 minutes, with the teams combining for 17 walks, six errors and five batters hit-by pitches, ended with the stadium lights being turned on at 5:15 p.m. with chilly conditions. “Wish we would have ended up on the other side of things, but at least we're playing ball at home,” said Mayer. -
The work has been nonstop for NVC baseball since the start of the school year
December 11, 2024By MARTY JAMES martyjames.sports@gmail.com There is so much work that has gone into getting Napa Valley College baseball ready for the 2025 spring season. There is the fall program, which began in late August and encompasses practices and scrimmages. There is conditioning, which puts an emphasis on weight training and running. There is study hall. There is also all the extra work that players are putting in at Storm Field – such as getting in more and more swings in the batting cages, either before or after practices, or just getting out on to the field to play catch. They go about doing this on their own, without being asked, because as head coach Derek Mayer puts it: “That's where their heart and motivation is.” -
NVC men’s soccer team looking for first win, first goal of season

The Storm is also looking for its first goal of the season. After losing its season opener, 1-0 to Folsom Lake College, the Storm continued its nonconference season, playing its first road match on Friday, Aug. 30 at Modesto Junior College. Napa Valley was shut out, losing to Modesto, 3-0. -
Move-in day filled with excitement as NVC student athletes check in to River Trail Village
August 20, 2024By MARTY JAMES martyjames.sports@gmail.com With his golf bag in hand and his family by his side, Dominic Taverrite called his arrival at Napa Valley College on Friday “just a really surreal experience.” It was move-in day for Taverrite and many of the school’s student-athletes, who arrived throughout the day and checked into River Trail Village, a brand-new, beautiful on-campus housing complex that opened in August. Taverrite said he has spent his whole life dreaming of playing college golf. At Napa Valley, he will get that opportunity, playing in a program led by head coach Bob Freschi. -
Alfredo Hernandez settling into job as NVC’s Athletic Academic Counselor

Hernandez was in elementary school when his older sister, Dalila Hernandez, would drop him off, either at the Math Department or the McCarthy Library, while she was taking a class at NVC. It’s where Alfredo spent part of day after school – getting his homework done, reading, and staying on top of his studies as a student at Vichy Elementary School. It’s where he got his AA degree in Natural Science in 2012. -
Storm Cup benefit golf tournament August 19 at Napa Valley Country Club

The second annual Storm Cup is sponsored by the Napa Valley College Foundation. The driving range opens at 10:45 a.m. The tournament has a 12 p.m. shotgun start. Lunch is included.
