It was gusty, and it affected some guys. “If we could break 400, we'd be in good shape. We were close. Very close.”

  • Napa Valley College, Reedley College meet in a matchup of top golf teams

It was a dual match between teams that are red-hot in their respective divisions – Napa Valley having won four straight Big 8 North Division tournaments and Reedley having won five consecutive Big 8 South Division tournaments. It was a matchup of teams that each placed at last year’s California Community College Athletic Association State Championships at Sandpiper Golf Club in Goleta (Santa Barbara County) – Reedley finishing second and Napa Valley placing fourth. It was a matchup of very strong and talented men’s golf teams on Wednesday at Silverado Resort. “It's always fun and a pleasure to play Reedley and compete with them and see where we're at,” said Bob Freschi, Napa Valley’s head coach. “This is a great opportunity, again, to see a team we haven't seen in a long time,” said Scott Stark, Reedley’s head coach. “(Coach Freschi’s) a great friend of mine. Really respect what he's done up here. I know they're on a really good streak of four in a row, and they've taken over command of the North Division.

Freschi, the Storm’s coach, let his team know how he felt. “It was needed to be done early in the season,” said Freschi. “I was just disappointed and thought that we've been underachieving. We were a little undisciplined, so we needed to tone it back a little bit.” Freschi’s talk took place during a team meeting after the Storm’s second tournament of the season, on Feb. 19 at The Ridge Golf Course in Auburn. He called it “disappointing,” a start to the season that also included a third-place finish in a Feb. 10 tournament at Woodbridge Golf & Country Club, in San Joaquin County.

DeBellis, wearing a short-sleeve golf shirt and golf shorts, was thinking about going low in a tri-match for the Napa Valley College men’s golf team. He wasn’t thinking about making pars. He was thinking about making birdies. “I think today I had a different maturity level where I was like, I'm thinking about my score, but in a way, to go lower. Not worried about going above. Not worried about making a mistake,” said DeBellis, a sophomore for the Storm. “I was just trying to keep it going. And when you're feeling good, you're feeling good, and that definitely helps to go lower.”
