  • Obelleiro ends two-year NVC women’s golf career as one of the greatest players in school history

    By MARTY JAMES martyjames.sports@gmail.com Jill Obelleiro said it was “definitely a little intimidating” when the starter announced the other players in her group on the first tee during the opening round of the California Community College Athletic Association State Women’s Golf Championships on Nov. 17. There was Madi Paulsen of Sacramento City College, the individual winner of the Northern California Regional Championship. There was Annie Betts of Santa Barbara City College, the individual winner of the Southern California Regional Championship. There was Kiana Glossner, the two-time Player of the Year in the Orange Empire Conference for Cuyamaca College-El Cajon.

    By MARTY JAMES martyjames.sports@gmail.com Jill Obelleiro concluded one of the greatest careers by a player in Napa Valley College women’s golf history, tying for ninth place individually on Monday at the California Community College Athletic Association State Championships in Nipomo (San Luis Obispo County). After starting out the two-day, 36-hole season-ending tournament on Sunday with a 7-over-par 78, Obelleiro, a sophomore, played her final round for the Storm, carding a 10-over-par 81, good for a top-10 finish at Monarch Dunes Golf Club. Obelleiro’s two-day total of 159 led Napa Valley, a member of the Big 8 Conference, to a ninth-place team finish. She was tied for 11th place in the first round. “I definitely had a fun time on the team for the last two years,” said Obelleiro. “(Bob Freschi) is just a great coach; just always is making sure that we're having fun. So, I really enjoyed that. And the girls, they're incredible.” Obelleiro completed her round, getting up and down from off the green and making a par-saving putt from 12 feet on No. 18. It was her final hole of the day. “She was ecstatic,” Storm head coach Bob Freschi said. “It was really impressive.

    By MARTY JAMES martyjames.sports@gmail.com Napa Valley College’s Jill Obelleiro, a sophomore, opened the California Community College Athletic Association Women’s Golf State Championships with a 7-over-par 78 on Sunday and is tied for 11th place individually. Obelleiro, who was named to the All-Big 8 Conference team, is one of 15 players who posted scores in the 70s at Monarch Dunes Golf Club, in Nipomo (San Luis Obispo County). Obelleiro, the Storm’s No. 1 player, trails Michelle Khin of Orange Coast College-Costa Mesa, the first-round leader, by seven shots.
  • Napa Valley College women’s golf team heads to state tournament

    By MARTY JAMES martyjames.sports@gmail.com AMERICAN CANYON – The 2024 season for the Napa Valley College women’s golf team ends with one last van ride and one final tournament. On Saturday morning, the Storm is off to Nipomo, in San Luis Obispo County. It’s a long-distance road trip of 294 miles. They qualified as one of the top four teams from Northern California and will play in the California Community College Athletic Association Championships, Sunday, Nov. 17, and Monday, Nov. 18 at Monarch Dunes Golf Club. The two-day, 36-hole event – which has a nine-team field and individual qualifiers from both Northern and Southern California – will crown a team champion and individual low medalist. According to the club’s website, monarchdunes.com, “the par-71 championship design introduces extraordinary links-style golf to central California’s scenic wine country.”

    On Monday, Napa Valley had rain and cold temperatures, a powerful combination that had the par-72, 5,612-yard course at Wildhorse Golf Club in Yolo Country playing even more difficult in the second round of the 2024 California Community College Athletic Association-Northern California Regional Women’s Golf Championships. The field played from the blue/white tee markers. It’s the first time that the NVC team has played in the rain.

It was the 12th tournament of the Big 8 Conference season. Napa Valley posted a 354-team score in the six-team event.
  • NorCal Regional Championships next for Napa Valley College women’s golf team

It’s a two-day, 36-hole event on Sunday, Nov. 10 and Monday, Nov. 11, at Wildhorse Golf Club, in Davis. Napa Valley is a tournament-tested team, having played in 12 Big 8 Conference tournaments during the fall season. The Storm has also played in dual matches. “At the NorCal Championship, we have to play good golf and we just have to be in the right frame of mind. We have the ability. We have to eliminate those big numbers,” Storm head coach Bob Freschi said. Napa Valley finished in fourth place in the Big 8 Conference and Jill Obelleiro, the Storm’s No. 1 player and sophomore team captain, was named to the All-Big 8 Conference team.
  • Sanchez, Thompson-Rangel lead Napa Valley College women's soccer team in 8-0 win

    By MARTY JAMES martyjames.sports@gmail.com Annie Sanchez and Thais Thompson-Rangel each scored three goals and Leila Newberry scored two goals to power the host Napa Valley College women's soccer team to an 8-0 Bay Valley Conference win over Mendocino College-Ukiah on Friday, Oct. 25. It was a hat trick for both Sanchez, a sophomore forward, and Thompson-Rangel, a freshman midfielder. It was the sixth win of the fall season for Napa Valley (6-2 overall, 6-2 Bay Valley), which also registered its second shutout.

Emotional because, as the only sophomores on the Storm women’s golf team, it was their final home tournament of the 2024 season. Emotional because of the commitment that they have given to the Napa Valley program over the two years.

The big story during Thursday’s dual match against Sacramento City College was the wind. “It was blowing at Wildhorse (Thursday),” said Storm coach Bob Freschi.

Arriving early as the host team for Thursday’s Big 8 Conference North Division tournament, the Storm went first to the practice green at Chardonnay Golf Club & Vineyards for team photos and individual photos. They then went about their business in a very impressive way, shooting a 344-team score and taking third place in a five-team field.

    By MARTY JAMES martyjames.sports@gmail.com AMERICAN CANYON – It wasn’t the 7-over-par 79 round that she posted at Chardonnay Golf Club & Vineyards on Tuesday that had Jill Obelleiro so excited. It wasn’t the three birdies on her card, either, or the way that she finished, with standout play on the back nine of the course. It was something else. “Honestly, I think it was my attitude, because there were some shots that I could have gotten really down on myself for, but I was just kind of like, it's golf. You can't really be mad. You can't go back,” Obelleiro, a sophomore, said. “I think my attitude is what kept me going. I had some good shots and I had some bad (shots). But I was able to pick myself up, because I didn't dwell on it.” Obelleiro plays in the No. 1 position for the Napa Valley College women’s golf team. She is one of the top players in the Big 8 Conference’s North Division. Now she is adding to her game, as she is focusing more and more on the mental game of golf.
  • Move-in day filled with excitement as NVC student athletes check in to River Trail Village

    By MARTY JAMES martyjames.sports@gmail.com With his golf bag in hand and his family by his side, Dominic Taverrite called his arrival at Napa Valley College on Friday “just a really surreal experience.” It was move-in day for Taverrite and many of the school’s student-athletes, who arrived throughout the day and checked into River Trail Village, a brand-new, beautiful on-campus housing complex that opened in August. Taverrite said he has spent his whole life dreaming of playing college golf. At Napa Valley, he will get that opportunity, playing in a program led by head coach Bob Freschi.

Hernandez was in elementary school when his older sister, Dalila Hernandez, would drop him off, either at the Math Department or the McCarthy Library, while she was taking a class at NVC. It’s where Alfredo spent part of day after school – getting his homework done, reading, and staying on top of his studies as a student at Vichy Elementary School. It’s where he got his AA degree in Natural Science in 2012.

The second annual Storm Cup is sponsored by the Napa Valley College Foundation. The driving range opens at 10:45 a.m. The tournament has a 12 p.m. shotgun start. Lunch is included.

One day, it could be hitting from the fringe area around the green. Another day, it could be hitting from 100 yards in to the green. “Each day, we focus on something,” head coach Bob Freschi said. “We change it up. But we're always out there playing.”
