  • Napa Valley College gym a home away from home for Helena White, Storm’s two-sport athlete

    By MARTY JAMES martyjames.sports@gmail.com Helena White was a year-round athlete, playing on volleyball, basketball and softball teams, while also competing in wrestling, during her high school years at Priest River Lamanna in Idaho. She is doing something very similar as a freshman at Napa Valley College. In the fall, she played for Coach Scott Bishop’s Storm volleyball team as a middle hitter and middle blocker. This winter, she is playing for Coach Paul DeBolt’s Storm basketball team at the forward and post positions. “I think it helps me academically, mentally and physically, to just be in a sport,” said the 5-foot-10 White. “It keeps me going in my classes and it helps with my grades and everything, overall. “I feel good when I play sports. So, the gym is where I spend a lot of time, and I love it.” The gym is a home away from home for White.
  • Historic night as Napa Valley College’s Jamison reaches 1,000 career points in Storm’s win

    Rose Jamison left the team room and Napa Valley College gym with the game ball Wednesday night. It was presented to her by head coach Paul DeBolt after she reached the 1,000-point scoring mark, a historic achievement and milestone, while also attaining a double-double in the Storm’s 78-41 Bay Valley Conference women’s basketball win over Los Medanos College-Pittsburg. “That's her 1,000th point ball,” said DeBolt. “I wanted her to have that ball. It's pretty cool to see her do that. It's something to be celebrated.”
  • NVC women's basketball has six-game winning streak end with loss to Laney College

Arianna Aguilar hit five 3-pointers and scored 22 points, leading three players in double-figure scoring, as Napa Valley beat Yuba College, 72-55, in Marysville on Wednesday. The Storm took a six-game winning streak into its game on Friday, Jan. 24 against Laney College-Oakland, the Bay Valley’s first-place team that is also state ranked. It was Aguilar leading the Storm with 19 points, but Napa Valley lost to Laney, 78-45. Laney (18-3 overall, 9-0 Bay Valley) is No. 6 in the California Community College Women’s Basketball Coaches Association State Top 25 Poll, announced in a report by the California Community College Athletic Association, at www.cccaasports.org, on Jan. 21. There are seven games to go in the 2024-25 regular season for Napa Valley (11-10 overall, 7-2 Bay Valley), which is tied for second place in the conference standings with Solano Community College-Fairfield (12-9 overall, 7-2 Bay Valley). “Just one at a time. We're not worried about seven. We're worried about one,” NVC coach Paul DeBolt said after the Storm’s game against Laney. “We got through this one healthy. And so that's important. And now, it's just getting the mojo back and getting after it one at a time. “We’ve got Merritt (College) Wednesday here. That's what we're focused on.” Napa Valley outscored Yuba in the second half of the game, 38-24.

    By MARTY JAMES martyjames.sports@gmail.com In a key Bay Valley Conference game, the Napa Valley College women's basketball team extended its winning streak to four straight, beating host Solano Community College in Fairfield on Wednesday night, 63-57, as Rose Jamison scored 29 points and had 10 rebounds to lead the Storm. Napa Valley (9-9 overall, 5-1 Bay Valley Conference) also got 18 points, eight rebounds, eight assists and four steals in 39 minutes from Jazmine Fontilla. Napa Valley and Solano (10-9 overall, 5-2 Bay Valley) were tied, 47-47, going into the fourth quarter. Fontilla and Jamison each scored five points in the fourth quarter. With two points each was Arianna Aguilar, Helena White and Marticia Pollard.
  • NVC women’s basketball loses Bay Valley Conference opener to Laney

    By MARTY JAMES martyjames.sports@gmail.com Three players, led by Jazmine Fontilla, scored in double figures, but the Napa Valley College women’s basketball team lost its Bay Valley Conference opener, 79-52, to host Laney College-Oakland on Tuesday, Dec. 17. Fontilla scored 15 points, with two 3-pointers, and also had 10 rebounds and three assists. Rose Jamison scored 14 points, going 4-for-6 at the free-throw line. She also had six rebounds, two assists, four steals and three blocked shots. Arianna Aguilar scored 12 points, going 3-of-4 at the free-throw line. She also had 10 rebounds and two assists. The loss was the second in a row for Napa Valley (4-8 overall, 0-1 Bay Valley Conference), which fell behind early, 24-9 in the first quarter, and 44-30 at halftime. Laney took a 64-37 lead into the fourth quarter. Napa Valley shot 34.0 percent from the field (18-of-53), 33.3 percent from 3-point range (3-of-9), and 65.0 percent from the free-throw line (13-of-20).
  • NVC women’s basketball secures second-place trophy at Storm Surge tournament

    There were big smiles all the way around for the Napa Valley College women’s basketball team when it came time for team pictures alongside the second-place trophy at the fourth annual Storm Surge on Saturday. “Overall, I think we played well,” Napa Valley assistant coach Zack Cook said. “We had a little losing skid coming in, and it was nice to get two wins under our belt and just build some confidence. We played better defensively. Offensively, we got a couple players going shooting-wise that had been struggling.” Yes, there was definitely a lot for Napa Valley to feel good about as the host of Storm Surge, a preseason invitational tournament that had an eight-team field, with four games each day, from Dec. 12-14. There is the fact that Napa Valley went 2-1 in the tournament and played in the championship game. There is the fact that Rose Jamison, a sophomore guard, scored 80 points in the three games. She started out the tournament scoring a career-high 37 points as the Storm snapped a five-game losing streak, beating Diablo Valley College-Pleasant Hill, 72-52. There is the fact that Arianna Aguilar, a freshman guard, scored 47 points with 10 3-pointers. There is the fact that Napa Valley was effective from 3-point distance, with the Storm hitting 19 3-pointers overall.

    By MARTY JAMES martyjames.sports@gmail.com Rose Jamison scored a career-high 37 points and the Napa Valley College women's basketball team snapped a five-game losing streak, beating Diablo Valley College-Pleasant Hill, 72-52, in a first-round game of the fourth annual Storm Surge on Thursday night. It was also the first win at home for Napa Valley (3-6 overall), which went on a 21-0 run in the first quarter and a 9-0 run in the second quarter of the nonconference game. Jamison, a sophomore guard, scored 16 points in the first quarter, powering host Napa Valley to a 27-8 lead. It was a double-double for Jamison, who also had 16 rebounds. “Rose is a great all-around player. Just a very high basketball IQ,” Napa Valley head coach Paul DeBolt said. “She scores at all three levels. Smart defender. Superb rebounder. She's somebody you want on your basketball team.”

The Storm was behind early in Saturday night’s nonconference game, trailing Mission College-Santa Clara, 13-0 and 22-6 in the first quarter and 33-16 in the second quarter. But they did not fade away. The Storm’s top player, Rose Jamison, had to be helped off the floor with 3:08 to go in the first half due to an ankle injury. Again, they did not fade away.

Napa Valley (2-4 overall) was behind 28-13 in first quarter and 41-22 at halftime. The Storm, which has lost three straight, shot 22.8 percent from the floor (13-of-57) and 12.0 percent from the 3-point line (3-of-25). The Storm was a perfect 100 percent, going 12-of-12, at the free-throw line.
  • Napa Valley College women's basketball team drops second straight game

    By MARTY JAMES martyjames.sports@gmail.com The Napa Valley College women's basketball team lost its second straight nonconference game, falling to host Butte College, 74-43, in Oroville on Thursday, Nov. 21. Napa Valley (2-3 overall) was behind at halftime, 30-23, but was outscored by Butte, 29-6 in the third quarter. Napa Valley shot 41.0 percent from the field (16-of-39), 30.0 percent from 3-point distance (3-of-10), and 44.4 percent from the free-throw line (8-of-18). Arianna Aguilar, with 13 points, and Rose Jamison, with 11 points, were the only players in double-figure scoring for the Storm. Aguilar was 5-of-10 shooting from the field. Aguilar also had seven rebounds and three assists. Jamison was 5-of-10 from the free-throw line and also had three rebounds and four assists.

The Storm will play two nonconference games. On Friday, they face College of the Redwoods at 7 p.m. On Saturday, they will meet Lassen College-Susanville at 1 p.m.
  • Move-in day filled with excitement as NVC student athletes check in to River Trail Village

    By MARTY JAMES martyjames.sports@gmail.com With his golf bag in hand and his family by his side, Dominic Taverrite called his arrival at Napa Valley College on Friday “just a really surreal experience.” It was move-in day for Taverrite and many of the school’s student-athletes, who arrived throughout the day and checked into River Trail Village, a brand-new, beautiful on-campus housing complex that opened in August. Taverrite said he has spent his whole life dreaming of playing college golf. At Napa Valley, he will get that opportunity, playing in a program led by head coach Bob Freschi.

Hernandez was in elementary school when his older sister, Dalila Hernandez, would drop him off, either at the Math Department or the McCarthy Library, while she was taking a class at NVC. It’s where Alfredo spent part of day after school – getting his homework done, reading, and staying on top of his studies as a student at Vichy Elementary School. It’s where he got his AA degree in Natural Science in 2012.
  • Storm Cup benefit golf tournament August 19 at Napa Valley Country Club

The second annual Storm Cup is sponsored by the Napa Valley College Foundation. The driving range opens at 10:45 a.m. The tournament has a 12 p.m. shotgun start. Lunch is included.
