    By MARTY JAMES martyjames.sports@gmail.com The Napa Valley College men’s soccer team continued its season, tying Contra Costa College-San Pablo, 0-0, and beating Merritt College-Oakland, 3-0, in Bay Valley Conference matches. In a match on Friday, Nov. 8, in San Pablo, the Storm and Contra Costa battled to a 0-0 tie. Angel Olvera-Vega had five saves in 90 minutes at goalkeeper for Napa Valley.
  • Napa Valley College men’s soccer falls to College of Marin, 2-1

    By MARTY JAMES martyjames.sports@gmail.com The Napa Valley College men's soccer team got a goal from Gabriel Cendejas in a 2-1 Bay Valley Conference loss to host College of Marin on Tuesday, Oct. 29 in Kentfield. Cendejas, a sophomore defender, scored at the 70th minute mark of the second half to tie the match, 1-1. Mateo Villanueva-Martinez, a sophomore midfielder, had the assist. Napa Valley (2-10-3 overall, 2-3-2 Bay Valley) was behind, 1-0, at halftime.

    Photos by Marty James By MARTY JAMES martyjames.sports@gmail.com The Napa Valley College men’s soccer team went into Tuesday’s Bay Valley Conference match with a full roster, with everyone healthy for the first time all season. “We're healthy. Everyone is back,” Storm coach Rogelio Ochoa said before the match at NVC. “We're playing better soccer, where we're learning. Those are growing pains, but I think they're going to help us to follow through the season.” Returning for the Storm was Mateo Villanueva-Martinez, a sophomore midfielder and team captain. He has been out since injuring his shoulder early in Napa Valley’s season opener in August, in a nonconference game against Folsom Lake College. “The very first play, he got the ball, goes to the ground. It was literally two seconds to the season back in August,” Ochoa recalled.

The Storm was held to one goal and lost, 4-1 to Mendocino. The goal was the second of the season that Napa Valley (0-8-1 overall) has scored in nine games. It was the fourth loss in a row for Napa Valley.

    By MARTY JAMES martyjames.sports@gmail.com Going into Tuesday’s match, Napa Valley College head coach Rogelio Ochoa said he was looking for his team to create opportunities with the ball. It’s also about playing well, said Ochoa. “The goals will come, hopefully sooner, rather than later,” he said. “It's about having that confidence.” Napa Valley is still looking for its first win and also its first goal of the season following a 3-0 nonconference loss to City College of San Francisco in a nonconference match. However, for Ochoa, there were definitely some positives that highlighted the Storm’s play.

There was the Storm’s opponent, Folsom Lake College, which finished second in the Big 8 Conference and advanced to the California Community College Athletic Association-Northern California Regionals as the No. 6 seed last year. There was the weather, with sunny conditions and temperatures in the low 90s.
  • Move-in day filled with excitement as NVC student athletes check in to River Trail Village

    By MARTY JAMES martyjames.sports@gmail.com With his golf bag in hand and his family by his side, Dominic Taverrite called his arrival at Napa Valley College on Friday “just a really surreal experience.” It was move-in day for Taverrite and many of the school’s student-athletes, who arrived throughout the day and checked into River Trail Village, a brand-new, beautiful on-campus housing complex that opened in August. Taverrite said he has spent his whole life dreaming of playing college golf. At Napa Valley, he will get that opportunity, playing in a program led by head coach Bob Freschi.
  • NVC men’s soccer has been preparing for its season since the spring

    By MARTY JAMES martyjames.sports@gmail.com There has been so much work that has gone into preparing for the 2024 season for the Napa Valley College men’s soccer team. There’s the work in the spring time, with the Storm playing four matches, including those against Napa Valley 1839 FC, Vacaville Elite and Merced College. It’s a spring class and an important time for players in the program. “We got to play against quality teams and kept the boys training, kept the boys working toward their academic goals, and just kept the group going forward, so we can be as ready as possible for the fall,” Storm head coach Rogelio Ochoa said on Thursday, in the NVC Athletic Department offices. There were 27 players in the spring class.
  • Alfredo Hernandez settling into job as NVC’s Athletic Academic Counselor

Hernandez was in elementary school when his older sister, Dalila Hernandez, would drop him off, either at the Math Department or the McCarthy Library, while she was taking a class at NVC. It’s where Alfredo spent part of day after school – getting his homework done, reading, and staying on top of his studies as a student at Vichy Elementary School. It’s where he got his AA degree in Natural Science in 2012.
  • Storm Cup benefit golf tournament August 19 at Napa Valley Country Club

The second annual Storm Cup is sponsored by the Napa Valley College Foundation. The driving range opens at 10:45 a.m. The tournament has a 12 p.m. shotgun start. Lunch is included.
