Napa Valley College gym a home away from home for Helena White, Storm’s two-sport athlete
February 13, 2025By MARTY JAMES martyjames.sports@gmail.com Helena White was a year-round athlete, playing on volleyball, basketball and softball teams, while also competing in wrestling, during her high school years at Priest River Lamanna in Idaho. She is doing something very similar as a freshman at Napa Valley College. In the fall, she played for Coach Scott Bishop’s Storm volleyball team as a middle hitter and middle blocker. This winter, she is playing for Coach Paul DeBolt’s Storm basketball team at the forward and post positions. “I think it helps me academically, mentally and physically, to just be in a sport,” said the 5-foot-10 White. “It keeps me going in my classes and it helps with my grades and everything, overall. “I feel good when I play sports. So, the gym is where I spend a lot of time, and I love it.” The gym is a home away from home for White. -
NVC’s LaPointe, Widell, Santos named to All-Bay Valley Conference volleyball team
November 20, 2024By MARTY JAMES martyjames.sports@gmail.com Aubri LaPointe, Kendal Widell and Rylee Santos were named to the All-Bay Valley Conference volleyball team for Napa Valley College, Storm head coach Scott Bishop announced on Tuesday. LaPointe, a freshman outside hitter, was named to the first team. Widell, a freshman outside hitter, was selected to the second team. Santos, a freshman setter, was named honorable mention. -

Napa Valley College volleyball team opens its home season

It was a 0-3 week for Napa Valley, but for head coach Scott Bishop, there is a lot to like when it comes to seeing the development, growth and progress that the team is making, the great energy and effort that the team is giving, and the experience that they are getting, both in practices and matches. -
Napa Valley College volleyball team starts season with two wins in San Francisco
August 26, 2024By MARTY JAMES martyjames.sports@gmail.com The Napa Valley College volleyball team began its 2024 season by playing three matches on Friday, Aug. 23 at City College of San Francisco. It was a good start, with the Storm going 2-1 in nonconference matches. Napa Valley started off the season by beating Reedley College, 3-0. The Storm lost its next match, falling to Allan Hancock College-Santa Maria, 3-1. The Storm ended the day with a win, 3-1 over San Francisco. -
Big week for Napa Valley College volleyball team

It’s the first week of practices, with head coach Scott Bishop leading players through training and drills, while also starting to install offensive and defensive systems. -
Move-in day filled with excitement as NVC student athletes check in to River Trail Village
August 20, 2024By MARTY JAMES martyjames.sports@gmail.com With his golf bag in hand and his family by his side, Dominic Taverrite called his arrival at Napa Valley College on Friday “just a really surreal experience.” It was move-in day for Taverrite and many of the school’s student-athletes, who arrived throughout the day and checked into River Trail Village, a brand-new, beautiful on-campus housing complex that opened in August. Taverrite said he has spent his whole life dreaming of playing college golf. At Napa Valley, he will get that opportunity, playing in a program led by head coach Bob Freschi. -
Alfredo Hernandez settling into job as NVC’s Athletic Academic Counselor

Hernandez was in elementary school when his older sister, Dalila Hernandez, would drop him off, either at the Math Department or the McCarthy Library, while she was taking a class at NVC. It’s where Alfredo spent part of day after school – getting his homework done, reading, and staying on top of his studies as a student at Vichy Elementary School. It’s where he got his AA degree in Natural Science in 2012. -
Storm Cup benefit golf tournament August 19 at Napa Valley Country Club
July 22, 2024By MARTY JAMES martyjames.sports@gmail.com The Storm Cup, a golf tournament that benefits student athletes at Napa Valley College, is Monday, August 19, at Napa Valley Country Club. The second annual Storm Cup is sponsored by the Napa Valley College Foundation. The driving range opens at 10:45 a.m. The tournament has a 12 p.m. shotgun start. Lunch is included.
