By MARTY JAMES martyjames.sports@gmail.com
Scott Bishop did it all last year as Napa Valley College’s head volleyball coach.
He searched far and wide for players, eventually finding 12 freshmen to play for the Storm.
He ran practices and workouts and training sessions.
He put in offensive and defensive systems.
Goen’s complete game 5-hit gem, homers from Gray and Nelson lead NVC baseball to win
It was a day that began with Derek Mayer introducing and honoring seven Napa Valley College players on “Sophomore Day,” with the Storm’s head coach presenting each of them with a home gold jersey that is framed.
Addressing the fans on the first-base side of Storm Field in a pre-game ceremony, Mayer said: “I really appreciate all your support. This group of guys have been incredible to work with. Parents, you can be proud of your young men. They're extraordinary men.”

Nine players for the Napa Valley College baseball team had at least one hit and the Storm was ahead 5-1 in the fifth inning of its game against Solano Community College in Fairfield on Thursday.
But the Storm left 11 runners on base and could not hold on, losing 10-7 to Solano in the second game of a season-ending Bay Valley Conference series.
The loss is the fifth straight for Napa Valley (9-29 overall, 8-12 Bay Valley Conference).
Napa Valley is in sixth place in the conference standings with one game to go during the regular season.
Napa Valley College baseball gets two-run home run from Smith in loss to Solano
By MARTY JAMES martyjames.sports@gmail.com
There is a grit and toughness and an overall resiliency to the Napa Valley College baseball team that Wyatt Smith respects and appreciates so very much. It’s the way that the Storm competes and battles and stays locked-in that Smith, a redshirt freshman, is so very excited about.
“We're never out of a game all year. We're always fighting and yelling in the dugout. We're always up. I believe in my squad,” said Smith. “We’ve just got to get it done earlier.”
Opening a season-ending, three-game Bay Valley Conference series on Tuesday, Napa Valley found itself behind 6-0 in the fifth inning against Solano Community College-Fairfield at Storm Field. Napa Valley responded, getting a two-run home run from Smith in the sixth inning, and scoring an additional two runs in the eighth inning.
Injuries taking a toll on Napa Valley College baseball
By MARTY JAMES martyjames.sports@gmail.com
Napa Valley College went into the 2025 spring baseball season with very good depth on its pitching staff.
Injuries, however, have taken a toll, depleting and limiting the number of relievers for the Storm.
“We've been bit by the injury bug,” head coach Derek Mayer said. “We had a number of relief guys go down. We're pretty light on the pitching side of things. We've got options, just not as deep as we started the season with at this point.”

Another solid start for NVC’s Blake Goen; Storm falls 1-0 to Laney College
