Giles had nine points, eight rebounds, two assists, two steals and four blocked shots, but the Storm fell, 81-39 to Santa Rosa Junior College at Haehl Pavilion. It’s not a feeling that Giles wants to experience ever again.

First, it was announced that the Storm (16-12 overall, 10-4 Bay Valley Conference) is the No. 24 seed and will travel to face No. 9 seed San Jose City College (25-3 overall, 12-0 Coast-South Conference) in the first round of the California Community College Athletic Association Northern California Regional playoffs on Wednesday, Feb. 28. The start time for game is to still be announced. The 3C2A Regional Playoffs were announced on Sunday by the California Community College Athletic Association, at 3c2asports.org. “We're in,” said Storm head coach Paul DeBolt. “I knew we were going to be in. Just didn't know where we'd end up and who we played.

    By MARTY JAMES martyjames.sports@gmail.com With Brooklyn Giles scoring 26 points and Daralonie Sykes scoring 24 points, the Napa Valley College women's basketball team concluded the 2023-2024 regular season, defeating host Yuba College, 75-65, in a Bay Valley Conference game in Marysville on Thursday night. Napa Valley (16-12 overall, 10-4 Bay Valley Conference) ends the regular season on a two-game winning streak. Next for the Storm, which finishes the conference in third place, is the California Community College Athletic Association Northern California Regional playoffs, which start on Wednesday, Feb. 28.

In their final home game of the 2023-24 regular season, the Storm clinched both third place in the Bay Valley Conference and a playoff spot on Tuesday, coming from behind in a 59-47 win over College of Marin-Kentfield.

The Storm (14-12 overall, 8-4 Bay Valley Conference) is tied for third place with College of Marin-Kentfield heading into “Sophomore Night” as it hosts the Mariners (14-12 overall, 8-4 Bay Valley) in a key conference game on Tuesday, Feb. 20 at 5:30 p.m.

    By MARTY JAMES martyjames.sports@gmail.com Each day, on his way to work as the Social Media Manager for the Oakland Roots Sports Club, Mario Cendejas takes time to think about his journey in life – including his years at Napa Valley College and also Napa Valley 1839 FC, a men’s semi-pro soccer team. For Cendejas, there is a lot to reflect on – which goes back to getting his start as a photo intern with Napa Valley 1839 FC and then taking on more and more duties, such as sports marketing and videography. “Despite having to leave home and working in my backyard, had it not been for 1839 FC, I don't think I would be where I'm at now,” Cendejas said, recently. “And that's why, on my way to Oakland, my commute during the week, it’s a time of reflection for me. I get to reflect and realize how much I've accomplished. I had no idea where I was going with this. But now, I've gotten somewhere.”

The Storm, with three players scoring in double figures, extended its winning streak, beating Contra Costa College, 65-51, in a Bay Valley Conference game in San Pablo on Jan. 10. Brooklyn Giles had an outstanding all-around game for Napa Valley (9-9 overall, 3-1 Bay Valley), scoring 27 points on 11-of-14 shooting from the field. She also had 17 rebounds, four assists, two steals and two blocked shots. She was 5-of-8 from the free-throw line. Napa Valley was ahead 15-13 in the first quarter, 31-25 at halftime, and 51-45 going into the fourth quarter.

The loss is the second in a row for Napa Valley (2-2 overall), which is without two of its top players, returning starters Brooklyn Giles and Rose Jamison. Giles, a sophomore guard, suffered a sprained ankle in a game against College of the Redwoods-Eureka on Nov. 4.

A record-187 players earned All-Academic Team honors, the California Community College Athletic Association announced in a report, at www.cccaasports.org, on Nov. 10. It’s the “largest group in the history of the award,” the California Community College Athletic Association reported.

A 3-pointer by Jordyn Allen to start the fourth quarter pulled Napa Valley to within 12 points, but the Storm couldn’t get any closer as they fell, 82-49. Napa Valley was missing Brooklyn Giles, a returning sophomore guard, who suffered a sprained ankle in a game against College of the Redwoods-Eureka on Saturday, Nov. 4.

    By MARTY JAMES martyjames.sports@gmail.com Brooklyn Giles remembered exactly what coach Paul DeBolt had to say before the Napa Valley College women’s basketball team’s season-opening game on Wednesday night. “He just talked about execution. We have to stay disciplined, especially with the low numbers that we have. Discipline is key,” said Giles, a sophomore guard for the Storm. “He was just making sure we stay locked in and knowing our defensive and offensive assignments.” With only six available players, Napa Valley began the 2023-24 season in spectacular fashion, executing at a very high level on both offense and defense, getting scoring and rebounding from everyone, and extending its lead to a 32-point advantage in the third quarter. Giles had one of her best all-around games for Napa Valley, scoring 30 points and getting 28 rebounds, as the host Storm beat Sacramento City College, 70-45.
  • NVC’s Alliyah Fernandez to continue basketball career at Pacific Union College

    By MARTY JAMES martyjames.sports@gmail.com Alliyah Fernandez, a 5-foot-6 guard who played two years for the Napa Valley College women’s team, announced that she has made a commitment to transfer to Pacific Union College in the fall and will continue her basketball career with the Pioneers. Fernandez, who is originally from Saipan, plans to major in nursing, which is in PUC’s department of nursing and health sciences. The Pioneers play in the California Pacific Conference, an NAIA league that is comprised of 13 schools from three states (California, Nevada, Arizona). “PUC provides a really great nursing program,” said Fernandez, 19, who will be a junior in the fall, with two years of playing eligibility remaining. “I’m very grateful that PUC is giving me the opportunity to play basketball.
