Sykes scores 24 points to lead NVC women’s basketball in 67-61 win over Redwoods

Daralonie Sykes scored 24 points to lead four players in double figures as the Napa Valley College women's basketball team won its second straight game to start the 2023-24 season on Saturday, Nov. 4.

Napa Valley, playing at home, beat College of the Redwoods-Eureka, 67-61, in a nonconference game.

Sykes had a big game, as she also had four rebounds, eight assists, two steals and three blocks.

Also scoring in double figures for the Storm (2-0 overall):

* Jordyn Allen: 15 points, 10 rebounds, two steals.

* Hadieh Gallegos: 11 points, nine rebounds, four assists, two steals, two blocks.

* Brooklyn Giles: 10 points, four rebounds, three steals.

Also, for the Storm, it was Aaliyah Gaitan with five points, three rebounds and two assists, and Alicia Johnson with five rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Napa Valley was ahead 18-11 in the first quarter, 35-28 at halftime, and 52-43 going into the fourth quarter.

The Storm shot 38.4 percent (28-of-73) from the field, 23.5 percent from 3-point distance (4-of-17), and 63.6 percent at the free-throw line (7-of-11).

College of the Redwoods was led by Ronnee Norwood with 15 points, and Lilianna Hoban and Ellie Pesch each with 10 points.

Redwoods shot 34.7 percent from the field (25-of-72), 18.2 percent from the 3-point line (4-of-22), and 58.3 percent from the free-throw line (7-of-12).

Napa Valley is at home for a nonconference game on Wednesday, Nov. 8 against Reedley College at 3 p.m.
