NVC women’s basketball team runs win streak to five in a row

Make that five wins in a row for the Napa Valley College women's basketball team.

The Storm, with three players scoring in double figures, extended its winning streak, beating Contra Costa College, 65-51, in a Bay Valley Conference game in San Pablo on Jan. 10.

Brooklyn Giles had an outstanding all-around game for Napa Valley (9-9 overall, 3-1 Bay Valley), scoring 27 points on 11-of-14 shooting from the field. She also had 17 rebounds, four assists, two steals and two blocked shots. She was 5-of-8 from the free-throw line.

Napa Valley was ahead 15-13 in the first quarter, 31-25 at halftime, and 51-45 going into the fourth quarter.

The Storm won despite going 0-of-11 from 3-point distance.

Also scoring in double figures was Daralonie Sykes with 15 points on 5-of-11 shooting from the field. She also had six rebounds and two steals.

Jordyn Allen scored 12 points and had 19 rebounds, three assists and three steals. Bella Merritt scored six points and had seven rebounds and two assists.

Kamilah Tiongco scored five points and had seven assists and three steals.

Also playing for the Storm was Alicia Johnson (three rebounds) and Aaliyah Gaitan. NVC shot 39.3 percent from the field (24-of-61) and 65.4 percent from the free-throw line (17-of-26).

The Storm had 54 rebounds, 16 assists, 12 steals and three blocked shots.

Contra Costa was led by Nikkea Youngblood with 19 points and 13 rebounds and Nacaya Nash with 17 points.

Giles is averaging 15.7 points, 13.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 3.0 steals per game.

NVC is averaging 54.9 points per game on 33.7 percent shooting from the field, 22.2 percent shooting from 3-point range, and 62.6 percent at the free-throw line.

The Storm is also averaging 41.8 rebounds per game and 13.2 assists per game.

NVC continues its season on Wednesday, Jan. 17 at home against Solano Community College-Fairfield starting at 5:30 p.m. Solano (13-6 overall, 5-0 Bay Valley) is in first place in the conference standings and has won seven in a row.

NorCal teams in CCCWBCA State Top 25 Coaches Poll

Eleven Northern California teams are in this week's California Community College Women's Basketball Coaches Association State Top 25 Coaches Poll, as announced on Jan. 9, in a report from the California Community College Athletic Association, at www.cccaasports.org.

The rankings are led by No. 1 Butte-Oroville.

Also, in the rankings:

No. 5 San Joaquin Delta-Stockton, No. 9 Laney-Oakland, No. 11 Santa Rosa, No. 12 City College of San Francisco, No. 13 Folsom Lake, No. 16 Chabot-Hayward, No. 18 Cosumnes River-Sacramento, No. 20 College of San Mateo, No. 21 Sierra-Rocklin, No. 22 San Jose City.

CCCWBCA North Region Poll

The California Community College Women's Basketball Coaches Association North Region Poll, announced on Jan. 8, is led by No. 1 Butte-Oroville.
