NVC baseball looking for first win of 2024 season

The Napa Valley College baseball team is still looking for its first win of the 2024 season.

In recent nonconference games, the Storm lost to Chabot College-Hayward, 15-5; Modesto Junior College, 14-5; West Hills Coalinga, 9-0; Ohlone College-Fremont, 13-1; and Lassen Community College-Susanville, 11-1, in a game played at College of Marin-Kentfield.

A look at the most recent games:

* In the game against Chabot, on Feb. 6, Vincent Lencioni and Owen Nelson each hit a home run for Napa Valley, which left nine runners on base and struck out 12 times. Napa Valley pitching gave up 11 hits, 15 earned runs and walked six. Chabot had eight extra-base hits and had seven stolen bases.

Lencioni was 2-for-4 and also tripled while driving in three runs.

Nelson was 1-for-4. The Storm's other hits came from William Tokar (1-for-2) and Peyton McGowen (1-for-3).

Chabot scored three runs in the first inning, four runs in the third inning, four more runs in the sixth inning, one in the seventh inning and three in the eighth inning.

NVC scored one run in the second inning, three runs in the fifth inning, and one in the sixth inning. Nelson homered in the second inning.

Lencioni hit a three-run home run in the fifth inning.

Isaiah Franco took the loss after starting and pitching five innings. Jameson Hogarth and Khyler Crabbe pitched in relief.

* In the game against Modesto, on Feb. 10, Napa Valley was held to five hits, left eight runners on base and struck out nine times.

Modesto scored four runs in the fifth inning and five runs in the seventh inning.

Modesto had 15 hits, including eight extra-base hits.

Raisean Avila-Dorsey went 2-for-3 with two RBIs to lead Napa Valley.

Also, with hits were Lencioni (1-for-3, RBI), Nelson (1-for-5, RBI) and Tokar (1-for-4). Isiah Alred had an RBI.

Nelson had an RBI single to left field in the first inning.

Lencioni drove in a run with a single down the left-field line in the fifth inning.

Avila-Dorsey had a two-run single to center field in the sixth inning.

Hogarth took the loss after starting and going three innings. Nigel Clay, Diego Balderas Utrera and Samuel Anderson pitched in relief.

NVC pitching allowed 14 earned runs and walked eight batters. Storm pitching struck out eight batters.

* In the game against West Hills Coalinga, on Feb. 12, Napa Valley was held to six hits, left 13 runners on base, and struck out eight times.

Bode Joyner went 2-for-4 with a double to lead NVC.

Also, with hits for the Storm was Lencioni (1-for-5), Forrest Kistner (1-for-3), Anderson (1-for-4) and McGowen (1-for-3).

Kyle Worden started and took the loss for the Storm after pitching 6 1/3 innings. Khyler Cabebe threw 1 2/3 innings of relief.

NVC pitching gave up seven hits, walked 10, struck out six and allowed nine earned runs.

* In the game against Ohlone, on Feb. 13, Napa Valley was held to six hits, left seven runners on base, and struck out nine times. The Storm was also charged with two errors.

NVC scored its only run of the game as Lencioni had an RBI single in the third inning.

Avila-Dorsey was 2-for-4 and Lencioni was 2-for-4 with one RBI.

Also, with hits for NVC was Joyner (1-for-3, double) and Nelson (1-for-4, double).

Ohlone had 16 hits and scored three runs in both the second and third innings, and five runs in the fifth inning.

Franco took the loss after starting and pitching four innings. Hogarth and Anderson worked in relief.

NVC pitching allowed 16 hits and 12 earned runs.

Ohlone had 10 extra-base hits, which included three home runs.

* In the game against Lassen Community College, on Feb. 15, Napa Valley was held to six hits, leaving 13 runners on base, and striking out 11 times.

Avila-Dorsey 2-for-2 with a double and Lencioni was 2-for-5 with an RBI to lead the Storm.

Also, with hits was Cole Van Stone (1-for-4) and McGowen (1-for-4).

Napa Valley was charged with two errors.

Lencioni had an RBI single in the third inning, accounting for the Storm's only run of the game.

Lassen scored two runs in the fourth inning and added five more runs in the sixth inning.

Seth Vazquez started and took the loss, going 5 1/3 innings. Clay pitched in relief, working 3 2/3 innings.

NVC is 0-8 on the season.
