Napa, CALIF- On Friday 9/28/18 it was a game of missed opportunities by both offenses that resulted in a tie 1-1 between Napa and Contra Costa. These teams finished first and second last year in the Bay Valley Conference and the pressure of this game was important.
Both teams came in wanting to make a statement, Napa as defending champs, and Contra Costa to start conference by taking a game on the road. Throughout the game both teams were physical, and had quick counter attacks that were stifled by the defense. Possession was even on both halves of the field and missed offensive opportunities were frequent from both teams.
The first goal came late in the first half from a deep cross by George Binda found Luis Flores in the 43rd minute. As the half ended the Storm felt confident that more chances will go their way and the ball will find the back of the net.
Going into the Second half the Storm defenders were hard at work as the Comets began to play more aggressively offensively. The extra pressure from the Comets gave more shot on goal chances, which goalkeeper Jonathan Perez was stopping. As time ticked down the Comets sense of urgency heightened resulting on a foul called on the Storm just outside the 18 foot box. On the free kick, Carlos Cruz hit the right corner out of the reach of Perez in the 86th minute.
In the weaning moments of regulation and extra time the Storm had a few counter attacks but shots were off target resulting in the 1-1 tie. Sophomore David Jiminez said “It was a tough game since they are our rivals. With us scoring first gave our team that momentum boost. It was unfortunate that they scored near the end of regulation. However, we are going to use that as motivation to still reach for our goals to win league and play harder each game.”
The Storm are now (2-6-2) on the season, with there next match against Yuba College at Yuba. Jimenez “We expect another rough match, especially with the weather conditions. If we get rid errors and limit set pieces we can be successful and come out with a victory.”
